I'm Honoured

Tuesday 25 May, 2004, 07:45 PM

Many thanks to those of you nominated me for this. I'm well chuffed, as we say here in Blighty!

I'm guessing that this is the underlying reason my web server chose to go offline for 15 hours yesterday. Actually, strictly speaking, the web server was just tickety boo, it was merely unreachable by anyone other than a select few employees of a data centre in Belgium who had already gone home for the day. (Possibly tripping over my network cable on their way out of the building...) Now I'm able to see the logs, it turns out that it was running all the time, apart from the two times I power cycled it remotely in an attempt to get it to talk to me.

Sadly, I'm too much of a cheapskate to pay for 24/7 support. Inevitably, this meant that fell off the end of the Internet at about 5:45pm European time. That's still office hours for me here in the UK, but my hosting ISP is in Belgium for reasons I won't go into, which meant it was just too late to be in business hours according to my SLA. So I think I hit the 2nd worst possible case for my '1 business hour' service. (The worst would have been the same time on a Friday, obviously.) But it was of course optimally timed for business hours in the US, on the first working day after Eric posted the recommendations... *sigh*

Sorry about the outage...

And for those of you newly directed by Eric's list to my blog despite the recent outage, rest assured that I do normally talk about things other than service outages and my new car. Honest! :-)
