Avalon Projects on Visual Studio 2005 with WinFX Beta 1

Saturday 6 August, 2005, 11:13 AM

With WinFX beta 1 RC1 installing the SDK would automatically install the WinFX project types for Avalon (aka 'Fidalgo'). So after installing the SDK for WinFX beta 1 (not the RC) on my vista machine, I was wondering why these project types weren't showing up.

I assumed I had messed up something in the install order, so I just wasted a lot of time uninstalling and reinstalling stuff.

It turns out that these projects have simply moved - the VS Avalon projects are now installed separately from the SDK. You can download them from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=45f9be99-3264-4bf1-8879-78a7a95d9217.

This makes sense of course - Windows SDKs have traditionally been independent of Visual Studio. Putting these project types into their own install is perfectly logical. It just caught me out because it's not what the release candidate did. I hope I can save some other people the head scratching and time wasting I just went through.
